When you think of the term “caps” you may think about Hollywood movie stars getting their teeth “capped” so they can have a beautiful smile. Well, a cap is essentially a porcelain crown that is put over a tooth. When a tooth fractures, is chipped, or has a root canal treatment, often a crown is one option to restore it.

Many of our patients appreciate the fact that they can get the new super strong all zirconium crowns and bridges. These newer materials can have the strength of metal, with the esthetics of porcelain.

Using our new digital scanner, Dr. Kennedy can take the impression of your teeth and have it off to the lab within minutes. This helps to get the crown or bridge back in a very short time – several days sooner than with the traditional putty impressions that need to be poured up and set off to the lab. Everything can be done virtually and without cross-contamination. The added benefit of not having to take the impression, pour it up in stone and then trim it, saves so many steps and increases accuracy significantly.

Our lab appreciates the fact that we use digital scans as it makes it much easier for them to produce a more accurate crown in a shorter time.

Because we do our crowns in two visits to allow for a gorgeous custom-made porcelain restoration to be made by our dental lab ceramist, we will place an acrylic temporary tooth in its place for between one to two weeks. This temporary will protect your tooth from sensitivity, maintain the spacing in between the teeth, and keep the gum tissue from growing over the margins of the crown at the base.
