PORCELAIN VENEERS

Everyone wants to have a beautiful smile. It is one of the first things that many people see when they meet you. It reflects your confidence and can portray success especially when you are in a face-to-face customer service type of profession.

Dr. Kathryn Kennedy, DDS in Westmont, IL has been providing dental porcelain veneers for her patients for years. They offer a durable, beautiful, quick correction for dark teeth, chipped teeth, rotated or spaced teeth. It’s almost like having “instant orthodontics”. Patients appreciate that for veneers, not much tooth structure is needed to be removed to make room for the porcelain since they can be made as thin as half a millimeter thick and still be strong when bonded onto the teeth.

Porcelain veneers will look very natural and blend in with your own teeth since not only do they come in multiple colors and are custom-made, they also pick up the color of the underlying and adjacent teeth to a small degree, often making them un-noticeable.

WHAT IS A PORCELAIN VENEER?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is custom-made to fit over the front of a tooth to help change the shape, size, rotation, or color of a tooth. They are fragile as the shell, but because of the way they are bonded onto the teeth, they become extremely strong. They can be uses to close gaps between teeth, especially when orthodontics can’t achieve enough closure due to lack of space. If you have teeth that have shifted or are missing a portion of the tooth, or are discolored, this could be a good option for you.

HOW DOES A VENEER DIFFER FROM A CROWN?

A crown typically will cover the entire outer surface of the tooth, whereas the veneer is generally only put on the facial surface of a tooth, conserving the back side. In rare cases, we might do a veneer on the back of the tooth, but that might be if we needed to change the bite or open the vertical dimension of your teeth. The procedure is typically very similar, although the amount of tooth reduction is significantly less on a veneer than for a crown.
